The academic year throughout Japan begins in April. While my eldest child had her high entrance ceremony at the beginning of the week, my youngest daughter had her junior high school (middle school) entrance ceremony the day after.

My youngest child is now a student at Kanagusuku Junior High School. In America we would say she is a 7th grader. Kanagusuku Junior High School is located near our home in Naha, Okinawa.

Entrance ceremonies for new incoming students are rather significant events here in Japan. Normally, the students' attend these special events in formal attire. As an example, most father's wear suits and ties as I did.

For my family, the elementary school experience is over and done with. And three years later, in March, both of our children will have graduation ceremonies - our eldest child from high school and our youngest child from junior high school.
