International Food Potluck Party | マークの英語 Mark's English | 専門学校ライフジュニアカレジ LIFE Jr. College

A couple of weeks ago - at the end of November - I hosted an International Food Potluck Party with my homeroom class at Senmon Gakkou LIFE Jr. College here in Okinawa, Japan. The International Food Potluck Party is always a fun event.

There was lots and lots of delicious food to eat. Lots of good people to enjoy this special meal with. We all had an excellent time together.

The primary purpose of organizing and hosting such an event is to have a good time with my students, so they can better enjoy their school life. However, there are many more good reasons for hosting the International Food Potluck Party.

Besides wanting to create an enjoyable experience I also try to combine this event with the U.S. Thanksgiving Day holiday, so I can teach my Japanese some aspects of a very significant American occasion especially the concept of Thankfulness.

To better experience an American Thanksgiving meal I wish I could simply buy a turkey and serve it to my students, but turkey is in fact uncommon here in Japan and very hard to find. I know of one store here in Okinawa that has sold whole frozen turkeys, but they were very expensive. Also, it is very difficult to cook a whole turkey because the size of ovens is very small here in Japan and a whole turkey cannot fit into a standard sized oven.

Another reason for me to host the International Food Potluck Party is for my Japanese students to try eating foreign food. Basically, Japanese people eat Japanese food for just about every meal each day. My Japanese students are usually young adults 18 years old and up, but have seldom tried foreign (non-Japanese) food.

Furthermore, I like to organize and host the International Food Potluck Party for my Japanese students because I want these young adults to try cooking. Year and year most of my Japanese students do not know how to cook. I suppose either their mother or father usually cooks for them or they eat out. Ironically, many of my students are preparing to study abroad, and they will find it necessary to cook for themselves.

Often times when I organize these International Food Potluck Parties I like to also invite other faculty and staff, and this year was no exception. Many of these teachers and staff members rarely have opportunities to interact with my homeroom students, so this was a wonderful opportunity for both my students and for the other faculty and staff members here at Senmon Gakkou LIFE Jr. College in Okinawa, Japan.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am an American citizen, but I have been living and working in Okinawa, Japan for the past 19 years, and I have enjoyed my long career as an English language teacher. Even now I still search for new and better ways and means to educate my students. I have literally taught English and foreign cultures to 1000s and 1000s of students over the many years and I intend to teach 1000s and 1000s more for many years to come.

I am employed at Senmon Gakkou LIFE Jr. College in Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. There is no better school to study English than here at LIFE. Study with us here at Senmon Gakkou LIFE Jr. College in Okinawa, Japan.
